Glossary – here are some definitions of the medical terms that appear in Kristian’s Story

 

HDU – High Dependency Unit

 

sats – short for ‘oxygen saturation’ – a measure of the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream

 

ICU – Intensive Care Unit

 

PALS – Patient Advice and Liaison Service

 

EEG – Electroencephalography- a recording of the electrical activity across the scalp

 

LGI – Leeds General Infirmary

 

BRI – Bradford Royal Infirmary

 

CT scan – Computerised tomography scan – scan using x-rays to created detailed images of the inside of your body

 

TED stockings – Thrombo Embolus Deterrent Stockings – medical stockings for bed-bound patients after an operation to help prevent blood clots and equalise blood pressure

 

PICC line – peripherally inserted central catheter – an intravenous form of administering drugs that can be used for a prolonged period of time

 

Cannula – a tube inserted into the body for the delivery or removal of fluid

 

NG tube – nasogastric tube – a feeding tube passed through the nose and down the oesophagus into the stomach

 

IV line – intravenous line, or ‘drip’

 

meds – short for ‘medications’

 

SHO – Senior House Officer
